Does Britney Spears bring out your inner guilt?
Have you read this article in New York Magazine ? Here is what I wrote in the comments at New York Magazine's site:
It's possible that for one particular group of moms being unfulfilled is an inducer of guilt, however our research points to Yelling as the number one inducer of guilt. (With the one exception of mothers of infants who aren't yelling yet.) There are quite a few inducers of guilt for mothers, both internal and external. As for Britney, most mothers I have come in contact with have stated they feel very sad for Britney; from the perspective of "She's a mom, I'm a mom" as well as "I have a daughter, she's a daughter" and lastly "I'm a daughter, she's a daughter." Most women recognize someone they know in Britney and can relate positively or negatively to that.
It looks to me like Britney has indeed been stoned in public, but I am of the opinion it is more likely to be the drugs, and definitely a large chunk of the press , doing it to her rather than other parents.
Am I high?

I don't know, Britney makes me feel like a good mom.
I feel bad that she is such a train wreck, but I'm also sick to death of hearing about it. There are tons of other people that are a mess too, they just weren't so publicly slutty as teenagers.
Chronologically she's an adult. However the way the press treats her, the way her family treats her and the way she acts it's a total case of arrested development and much of who she is appears to be still a teen in crisis.
I think Britney is such an interesting paradox at the same time she is a train wreck.
I feel sad for her but am also angry at her bad choices. And, at the same time I lament her status and choices as a mother, I think most of secretly - or outwardly - feel affirmed as a mother because of her mistakes. I don't know if either of these say more about her or me.
I don't know if you remember the article in Newsweek called, "Girls Gone Bad" but this topic was much of the focus. They even had the same comments from young/teenage girls that they just felt embarassed for Britney - now that's an interesting take - and certainly didn't want to emulate her. You can read it here: http://www.newsweek.com/id/36655
(As an aside, not many people took offense that the title was a play on Girls Gone Wild which I think is one of the supreme examples of degredation of young girls and women in general!)
Incidentally, we were deciding on schools for my daughter and she ended up going to the school mentioned in the article, Roland Park Country School. I'm sure that this subconciously played a part in my choice: my daughter now goes to RPCS. :-)
